I am an Associate Professor of Education at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
My scholarly work revolves around three diverse topics: poverty and education, philosophy and pop culture, and Prisoners of War in Iowa between 1943 and 1946. My work has been published in the Annals of Iowa, the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, Radical Teacher, and in both the Wiley-Blackwell Pop Culture and Philosophy Series and the Open Court Pop Culture and Philosophy Series (links to the books are below).
As an education professor at Simpson College, I rely on my 15 years of teaching grades 6-12 to help my students leave Simpson ready to begin work immediately as effective classroom teachers.
As a Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau Representative, I travel around the state of Iowa sharing my knowledge of role that Axis prisoners of war played in helping Iowa farmers during the Second World War. What is especially important is that a camp in Clarinda, Iowa, was one of only two camps in the nation that housed Japanese Prisoners of War.
I have four wonderful children (20, 16, 14, 10), and an amazing wife and partner (of 21 years).
